Having been raised in a typical, Catholic adoptive home (both of my adoptive parents are white), I learned from an early age that being gay wasn't exactly accepted or understood. When I told my parents and brothers, they took the news very hard...especially my father. He still believes that I'm straight, since he says that I'm too straight acting to be really gay. He thinks I'll grow out of it. My mother blames herself for my gayness. She believes that she did something to make me gay...I've been trying to explain to her that it doesn't work that way. It just took me seventeen years to admit it to myself. Right now I'm a college sophomore and live off-campus with my boyfriend of six months. He is not "out" to anyone. It is very difficult to keep a relationship with someone who can't or won't admit to being gay. He has dated women in the past and has told me that his preference is for males. Maybe he's bi? Who knows. I personally don't believe in the whole "bi" thing..a person who says he is "bi" usually is just too afraid to admit to being gay. It would be a lot easier to just be straight and not have to deal with all the junk that goes along with being gay...but it's not a choice. At least not in my case. I have no interest in sleeping with women. If gay men really had a choice in the matter...don't you think we'd choose to be straight? The "choice" factor doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I'm learning to be proud of being queer. Our society has a definite problem with people who are gay. Straight people probably could handle gay people if we didn't engage in sex with our partners, but sex is an important part of gay relationships too. We have just as much of a right to be happy as straight couples. My partner and I can't walk down the city street holding hands, we can't kiss in public or show affection to one another in public without massive scrutiny. It's really sad. I'm hopefull that society will grow up and realize that gay people are not perverts who have to keep their "sexuality" hidden from the general population.
