I am 37 and a half years old, and I've been masturbating since I was little. My parents (both of whom were baptized Methodists at the time) never punished me for masturbating, so I grew up never believing that it's wrong. The guilt and shame causes me to hate myself for giving my body pleasure and hate my body for enjoying receiving the pleasure. As a result, I am totally unable to focus on anything, not even God, when my body becomes sexually aroused. This is when I am expected to either pray, distract myself, replace my "impure" thoughts with more Godly thoughts, or simply resist the tempation to masturbate. I can resist the temptation to masturbate quite easily (I'm masturbating right now for Lent), but I've tried all of the other suggestions I've mentioned above, and none have worked for me. All I do is fantasize more, not less, and I still give in to masturbation. Anyway, these are questions that have been on my mind a lot lately for other Christians and the like. So far, no one seems to want to give me a straight answer concerning this issue. All they end up doing is make me feel more confused than I was before. So, I've decided to finally do this: I will try my best to overcome masturbation, especially for Lent, but if I end up masturbating anyway, I will try my best not to feel guilty and ashamed of it. This single Christian woman who enjoys sleeping in her own bed and having her own bedroom, TV, and furniture will feel sexually oppressed by others no more! From now on, I will only obey God. I will not obey anyone who tries to oppress and punish me just because I'm a single Christian woman who wants to maintain her virginity. Only God can tell what I can and cannot do with my body, so I'll quit masturbating altogether only if He says I need to. I'm not going to quit because of someone else's opinion.
