I was raised in a Christian family and thus masturbation was taboo. My parents were from the depression era and so sex education was pretty slim and embarrassing for them to talk about. They however didn't teach us that sex or our sexuality was bad - thank God. When I was around 8 y/o, I started getting erections but they were a pain and uncomfortable and I didn't relate it to any kind of pleasurable experience. When I was 12 I was taking a bath and while washing my genital area, I became erect but the washing felt good. I began to rub the head of my penis with the palm of my hand, but after several minutes of this, the pleasurable feeling got stronger and it kind of scared me and I stopped. Through the next couple of months I would repeat this stimulation while bathing, but when the tingling got stronger, I would worry I may be hurting myself or something and would always stop. Eventually of course, I brought myself to climaxing. I'm still religious (not a bible thumper type though) and attend church regularly but don't think God has any intention of damning me to hell because I masturbate. I've been divorced for several years and just because I'm single and not with anybody on a steady basis doesn't mean I've stopped being a sexual human being. I think our sexuality is a gift to us not only to share with somebody we love and care about, but to share with ourselves. Not in a selfish way, but in a deep and meaningful way. I would rather masturbate alone than to go our with a woman for a date or two and have sex for just sex sake - that's shallow and meaningless in the grand scheme of things. Although in my 'peace and love' days, I played the feild, but found how shallow it was. I protect, respect and care about my whole being of which my sexuality is part of. A lot of people forget the emotion and mental side of sexuality. Low self esteem has a lot to do with that. Even in self pleasuring, there is an emotional aspect and that's where the guilt or shame can come into play. Masturbation should be guilt free and a special time with one's self.
