Some conservative religious idealists will still say that masturbation is a sin. However, the reality of this statement must be seriously questioned because the words "masturbation" or "self-gratification" are not mentioned in the Bible at all. Interestingly, one religious group went as far as to publish a Guide to Self-Control which is a list of strict instructions for quitting masturbation. It seems as though they have taken quite a bit of liberty in interpreting the word of God in their literature.

If it were a sin, couldn't we assume that there would be stories, parables, or at least a statement against the practice of masturbation? Wouldn't there be dialogue about young or unmarried men being castrated or at least reprimanded for stimulating themselves? If God did not want us to masturbate, wouldn't it have been the 11th commandment? After all, the practice is very common. Why would any religious person dictate restrictive rules against masturbation? After careful study of the situation, the question is no longer whether or not it is against the doctrine, but rather the question becomes, why would anyone even suggest that it is? Several suspicions arise as to how the anti-masturbation ideals began.

(1) It could have started with parents who wanted to keep their children young and innocent. Keep in mind that for a parent, the thought of their own child acquiring a sexual identity and masturbating can be quite repulsive. After all, isn't the vice-versa thought of our parents having sex or masturbating awful to us? It's because of  the generation gap.

Some parents, teachers, ministers, priests, etc. would like to keep their children young, innocent, and impressionable instead of letting them explore and experiment with sexual sensations on their bodies. Masturbating to ejaculation is a sure sign of having a sexuality, growing up, and having an adult body. Often adults may assume a child of 10 - 12 years old is far too young to be experiencing such sensations. For such a young boy or girl to have a sex drive may be seen as nothing less than perverse. However, biologically speaking, this is the age at which normal hormonal changes in the body begin to happen which initiate the onset of puberty.

(2) Another possibility is that some high ranking religious leaders may have wanted to keep their followers feeling guilty as to encourage their frequent return to church to beg forgiveness. Not only do they keep coming back to church, but they also keep bringing their money to church for the offering baskets. In reality, the more guilt there is from masturbation, the more money they make. Masturbation is not something a normal guy can just easily quit. Few men have been successful at quitting. Even among priests themselves, there is masturbation. People have been known to suffer a great deal from trying to quit. The male body was designed to ejaculate on a regular basis. Funk and Wagnals Family Medical Guide says that regular release of semen is important for a healthy prostate.

Spiritually speaking, we should not be concerned about if or how much we masturbate. The act itself is a normal bodily function like any other. Trying to quit is impossible because we will no doubt eventually masturbate in our sleep. Rather than working on trying to quit, we should try to examine more carefully what we are thinking about while doing it. If we are experiencing profound lust for another human being while masturbating, of course it is a source of guilt. Fantasizing about people that we can not, should not, or will not be carrying on sexual relations with is damaging to our emotional spirituality. Having said that, I must mention that there is a link at the end of this story to the main page (Confidential Biography). I certainly can not argue that all the sexual things on the main site are acceptable. In fact, they are just the raw truth, not necessarily things that I advocate.

I feel it is much more of  a healthy practice if I concentrate on the sensation of my own body rather than sex fantasy or greedy self-indulgence. But wait, isn't masturbation all about self-indulgence? True, often the self is erotic and sensual but it all depends on our viewpoint of the situation to determine if it is self-indulgent. Many guys feel pride that they are male and find this to be quite an auto-erotic masturbatory thought. Feeling prideful to have a penis and a male body is a very powerful, self-gratifying thought. It is the pride that gets us into trouble. Pride leads us to the road of the sin. I know pride does not allow me to serve the Power greater than myself and it certainly doesn't allow me to follow God's will. Self-pride does not take God into consideration. When we have pride for something, it is assuming that it is our own creation, our own sensation, and our own experience, having nothing to do with God.

Instead of being full of pride, why not consider gratitude? Being grateful for a male body and the sexual sensations that go along with it brings in a whole new realm of spiritual experience. We then acknowledge it as gift and expressing thanks for it. It is no longer a selfish, self-gratifying , secretive act. When we are grateful for something, it includes another entity besides ourself  because there is the fact that we are grateful to someone for it. To whom should we be grateful for this gift?  God, of course.

I was raised in a SEVERLY conservative "cult" called the Free Will Baptist Church, and THE CHURCH made me feel guilty, not GOD. TITLE: Masturbation by Joann

I am a 38-year-old Christian. I became a Christian on April 21, 2002, and I was baptized in water on August 8, 2004. My church is a Word & Power Christian church that preaches against masturbation. However, as much as I love and desire God and want to be obedient to Him at all times, I do not agree that masturbation is wrong. Why? Because it isn't mentioned anywhere in the Bible as being right or wrong, therefore we are adding to Scripture what does not belong when we preach for or against it. I believe that God chose not to mention masturbation because He wants us to decide for ourselves, without mentioning it to anyone else, whether it is right for us or wrong for us. In other words, it is a matter of one's own personal choice, not a sin, to decide if one feels comfortable doing it or not. No one except God Himself has the right to punish us for enjoying our own sexual pleasures or to tell us what we can and cannot do with our own bodies, not even the church we belong to. Also, children should never be punished for masturbating, either. Why? Because it undermines their self-esteem and self-worth as human beings as well as their curiosity and enjoyment of their own bodies, and it prevents them from enjoying healthy sexual relations in marriage later in life. How? They may learn to associate sexual pleasure with punishment by believing that they will be punished for experiencing sexual pleasure. Plus, women sometimes use masturbation as a way to get to know their own sexual likes and dislikes in preparation for a possible marriage. Otherwise, how are their future husbands supposed to learn how to please them during sex if these women aren't allowed to teach them? We don't fumble around in the dark without a flashlight or buy a car without test-driving it first, do we? So, how come we can't "test-drive" our bodies through masturbation, since us single Christian women aren't allowed to commit fornication, either? Just a thought. Thank you, and God bless!

TITLE: John - Who wrote the Bible anyway

I never read a biography that said something like "Just before the President decided to get on the plane he decided to have a quick wank just in case the plane would crash" or some football player at the end of a terrible match saying "I should not of had that wank in the locker room, it put me off my game". Do you think those guys who wrote the Bible know anything more than we do about each other. Do we go around telling the public "I had a wank last night and this morning". It's a personal thing the majority of the time.----- I was brought up a strict Christian and believed the New Testament was written by people who were around Jesus when he was alive. I had intensive religous studies at school and the more I read and investigated who these people who wrote the New Testament were, the more I began to understand that these people were frauds, money grabbing, sexually perverse people.----- Consider this. In the Roman Catholic faith women were not allowed to become priests, why? Women have been told for centuries that they are dirty, a temptation from the path of rightiousness, etc, why?-----These people who wrote this, had they no respect for their mothers? Other non-Christian societies held women in great esteem.----- So these guys write and tell you masturbation is wrong, it's an evil, it's a sin against God (which in their terms is really as sin against the Church) while all the time these people were able to wage wars against each other. The only reason they told people this (and got it written into the Bible) is so that they would not let us waste any chances of increasing their war machine and their wealth.----- Also, think of it this way. Masturbation is a release of pent up sexual frustration, so you do not go around having intercourse with every available female or male - less children outside marriage, because the RC Church has banned the use of contraceptives. Having wet-dreams and expecting your mother to wash your bed clothes, grow-up and have a wank once a week. Save her the trouble. The only guilt you feel is from the brainwashing you were given as a child. Once you realise that God is nature and you are part of nature then you will realise that everything you do and feel is natural to the human condition. Masturbating is not the greatest sin in this world. I'm sure God's not too concerned about it. Others, who are trying to control you are concerned. The greatest threat to their dominance over you is if you get to know yourself, becoming self aware and expressing yourself freely. This would break their control and change the balance of power.

TITLE: Religeous Mum / Trevor

When I became about 12 I, like most boys (and girls) discovered I loved masturbating. I would wait until bedtime and strip of my pygamas under the sheets and just enjoy the wonderful sexual feeling of my nakedness, feeling my body all over and obiously paying particular attention to my cock! I think these feelings are a natural thing and shouldnt be stifled. Unfortunately my mum didnt see it the same way. On several ocasions she discoverd my antics, sometimes because of stains on the sheets, or a few times caught in the act. each time I was hauled out of bed and told how dirty I was and how this sort of thing was a sin against God. She would then pull me accross her lap for a long hard spanking. Although I hated being spanked, the sexual impulse was very strong and I continued to masturbate.Eventualy mum gave up the ghost and the spakings became less freqent although she made up other excuses to get me accross her knee! I don't think that God hates people for masturbating. I think masturbation is a normal healthy way to explore your body, your likes and dislikes sexually, and it sure helps relieve a lot of pent up sexual tension. If people didn't masturbate, we would probably have a mostly chaotic society on our hands and due to the pent up sexual aggressions, people would be more hostile, violent, and the like. I was raised in an environment where my mother would answer any questions I ever had, (no matter what their nature)in the most honest and brief way she could. I have raised 6 children the same way, and when I had to be the one to give our boys the sex talk, I told all 4 of them that it was perfectly okay for them to explore their bodies and to masturbate if they felt that was what they wanted or needed to do, but that they had to do it in the privacy of their own rooms, bathroom, etc... I've never caught any of our children masturbating, aside from the times when they were toddlers and they were just discovering that they had good feelings when they touched themselves down there. When I did catch them, I would just say that that was something they should do in private, like in their rooms. I would never tell them that it was naughty, or dirty, or a sin. It's too bad more people don't just let their children or spouses be themselves, and maybe they can open up and just be themselves as well, and explore their own bodies to see what feels good. Not only that, you don't always have to be thinking about another person while masturbating, you can think of anything that will make you feel good while you do it.

Personally I have been masturbating since five. I am just a sexual person as we all are. God ahs created everything good. Now let me say this its what you do with your sexuality. All in modesty. If you are lusting after things and people then you need some type of help. Every situation is different. When I do i think of nothing but the pleasure it brings me. I am 30 years old, and a believer in God and his son Jesus. The church is known for making MAN feel guilty and condemned, but Jesus came to save the world from condemnation. Sexuality is spiritual. Thats why you must be careful of how you spread yourself to people. Think of energy. Energy is being passed from one to another. I can go on and on. Last I would like to say, I use to feel guilty for years, but once I started to follow Jesus and not the church that all ended. Shoot!, if it was not for masturbation I would not have been a Virgin until I was 26!!

READ EVERY YOUNG MAN'S BATTLE if you want an honest interpretation of the Bible. the argument that MASTURBATION IS AN OUTLET cannot be justified religiously because the reason that we need an outlet in the first place is because of all the sexual tension we created from fantasizing, sneaking glances, etc. which are obviously not of God. further more, the body allows for semen to be passed through the body into the urine without masturbation to keep the body well.

for an argument that has no holes READ EVERY YOUNG MAN'S BATTLE by stoekker.

If I had been born a female, I would have been a lesbian. Nothing against maleness, it is just the way I feel. Unlike the churchs stand on sex, there are many variations geneticaly. Since God made us, we cannot be mistakes. The onlymistake as I see it is buying in to the false doctrine of many churches, which preach it for Money, Power, and to keep a Patriarcy that shuts out women from their natural god given rights.

Some Candid Thoughts from a Mormon
Heterosexual
Male

I myself am part of an extremely conservative church - the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (otherwise known as Mormon). All our lives, we are taught about the Law of Obedience and the fundamental importance of following both the letter and spirit of what God commands as revealed to us through Scripture and the revelations given to us by God as conveyed to us through modern-day profits. These leaders over the years have directly addressed the difficulties arising from pornography and other such practices, which may cause an undermining of the traditional structure of the family.

The leadership of the Church has gone so far as to produce a document entitled How To Overcome Masturbation. Yet, it is almost the unwritten understanding among male members of the Church that masturbation is a widespread practice. More often than not, the preferred approach has been simply not to talk about it. All male members of the Church ages 12 and older are given the opportunity to receive the Priesthood of God, and there are different levels of Priesthood office (Deacon, Teacher, Priest, Elder, and High Priest) that a person may reach over the years, based on his worthiness as determined through meetings with the Bishop (the leader of the local congregation or Ward), the Stake President (the leader of the Church over a group of wards within a geographic area), and other leaders as prescribed. Such worthiness requires purity in thought, word, and deed and requires honest answers to interview questions posed by Church leaders to those who have the prospective opportunity to be elevated to a higher office in the Priesthood or to be found worthy to enter the Temple. One of the understood areas of purity concerns the act of masturbation.

In spite of my staunchly religious nature and the activism I have had in the Church all my life, the one thing that I have not been able to follow has been abstinence from masturbation, an activity in which I have been engaging since the age of 10 as the result of first feeling the sensation from physical contact with a doctor who was in the process of performing a routine medical examination in the presence of my mother. The physical contact lasted less than two seconds but (though most likely not the intention of the doctor) was enough to awaken in me the kinds of sensations that have since been impossible to stop. As may be readily testified to by others who have been raised in a religiously conservative family, I felt intense feelings of guilt for not being able to obey the rule of refraining from masturbatory practices. That inability to obey continues to this very day, more than 25 years later.

Long gone are the old feelings of guilt. The very day when I decided that masturbation was normal and that I am not a bad or sinful person because of it, everything changed for me. To the present time, I continue to give myself sexual pleasure, often multiple times within any 24-hour period. However, rather than feeling any guilt for it, I have come to accept it as a gift from God for enabling me to feel this level of sexual intensity. All the while, no one is harmed in the process. I have not committed adultery, do not otherwise engage in behavior that even our Church would consider sexually deviant, and do not make the kinds of choice that the Church would consider to be wrong. I continue to enjoy the benefits of masturbation and frankly wish my father and Church leadership had told me that it was OK so as to have saved me countless years of guilt and even anger for my not being able to or wanting to stop. Outside the sexual context, I continue to build my life, remaining more religious than ever but feeling that, if there was ONE thing I simply could not do, it was to stop masturbating. Though some may say that I am simply trying to justify a practice that is unholy in the sight of God, I must admit that I have prayed on countless occasions and feel a greater love for God than I have ever felt at any other point in my life. I feel His love and have seen him bless my life in countless ways, and it is easy for me at any given moment to count the many blessings that have enriched my life and that continue to do so.

While some may say that I am being a hypocrite for being an active member of my Church while quietly practicing masturbation, I have made it a point never to condemn others for this practice or to speak of this issue in any public or private setting in a manner that would purport to judge folks. I will never judge anyone for masturbating (1) because I do it and (2) I have never seen any negative or destructive results from doing what comes naturally to me as does come naturally to every guy out there (including in my Church) who engages in this practice but either may or may not be willing to admit it for fear of the social implications that could come from being judged or otherwise isolated from others.

And, while on the subject of admission, the deeper question is actually why this is such a big deal at the outset. Rather than devoting attention to issues surrounding masturbation, entities would be better served to focus on bigger issues that have a real impact on the world such as the need to serve the poor and disadvantaged, the need to be of service to others in a community setting in order to make a difference in the world, and the need to minimize conflict among ourselves whether at a person-to-person level or at an international level. Right now, at this very moment, innumerable issues are crying for our attention and, without our activism to help make things better, the problems of the world will still largely exist. So, for gosh sakes, in light of all the ills of the world that we should tackle, masturbation as a natural God-given pleasure for us should be at the bottom of the list. Instead, let us be accepting of one another and respect people's freedom of choice or, as we call in our Church, free agency. Without passing judgment on others, let us have respect for our bodies by being grateful for what we have been given and by appropriately giving respect to those around us. Let us embrace all that God has given us and also focus attention to the REAL issues that truly do matter. In this way, rather than causing unnecessary guilt among those who do masturbate, we may empower fellow citizens of the world to devote attention to other facets of their lives so they may maximize their talents and abilities for the good of others while not giving one more second's thought to any feelings of guilt surrounding masturbation.

And, I am saying all of this as someone who is openly conservative. There is a difference between religious conservatism and an acceptance of one's body and the natural pleasures we have been blessed to have quite literally right within our reach.

The Bible and Masturbation
Heterosexual
Male

I am a member of a rather strict relegious organization, but they do follow bible princepals.

There is a man mentioned in the old testament who was a hebrew, or Jew. His brother had died and left his wife without a child. Under the moasic law the living brother was to take his brothers widow and consumate a relationship with her causing the birth of a child. The purpose was to procure a son to carry his brother's lineage.

The man refused to ejaculate in her causing a pregnancy and let his seed spill out on the ground, and for defying the law of Almighty God he was put to death.

It was not for spilling his seed on the ground, but for disobedience to a law supplied by God himself. If a family line was allowed to die out, it could have interferred with the geneology of the Christ. This was the main purpose for brother-in-law marriage, and in refusing this direction he was sinning against God and his brother.

You are absolutely correct, masturbation is not mentioned in the bible. We do understand that it can lead to unclean desires, and possibly present problems in the marriage. And for these reasons it is discouraged, but if it is practiced it is just best to keep it to yourself. I don't know anybody who wants to brag about it anyway.

The reason boys feel guilty after masturbation is *NOT* because god is telling them it's bad, it's because through life they've been taught by people like the certain posters here that playing with yourself is evil, and because they've also been taught that the genital area is something to be ashamed of. It's called cultural conditioning, not divine intervention, and to say otherwise is innately stupid in the utmost. Whilst I'm not religious myself I do have total respect for those who do believe in god, and I find the idea that people are using god as an excuse to impart guilt on what are already sexually stressed boys offensive to what I consider a essentially positive notion of religion. God is meant to be comforting, not dictatory.

Ok, let's face the facts here fellas.... Do you feel guilty doing this??? Well, come on, do you remember the first time you ever did it? You felt guilty didn't you. I'm reminded of Adam and Eve in the Bible. When Adam and Eve sinned, they went and hid themselves from God. Why? Because of guilt. Eating the forbidden fruit gave Adam and Eve the ability to judge and discern right and wrong. No one had to tell you it was wrong to masterbate, you just knew. I never had ANYONE tell me it was wrong, I never had ANYONE tell me it was immoral, I never had ANYONE tell me it was a sin... But the first time I did it, I KNEW IT WAS A SIN. Sometimes it's easy to believe what you want to believe. I'd rather believe it wasn't wrong, but in my heart I know it is. And if something as sinful as the heart can tell the difference, shame on me for not realizing it when I was younger. I have struggled with this issue for many years. I have searched scripture to confirm or deny my feelings on the issue. While I find little in the way of addressing the issue directly, I find NOTHING that condones it either. Oh, and just because a sin isn't mentioned DIRECTLY doesn't mean that it isn't mention catagorically. For example, the Bible never says that copying and selling a copywrited DVD is wrong does it? Nope, but it does say that stealing is. Just because God doesn't spell it out in such plain language that a blind, deaf, mute can understand it doesn't mean that he didn't address the issue. In the end, for those that need clarification, no amount of clarification on the subject can be given, no matter how many times we are told thou shalt not commit adultery and if a man looks on a woman to lust after her, he has committed adultery with her in his heart already. Or warnings from Paul to gird up the loins of your mind... Obstain from youthful lusts warnings agains immorality in general. In the end, we know that it is wrong and we have to repent, seek deliverance and pray to be made strong in our weakness. The Bible says that Jesus is coming back for a Bride without spot or blemish. If the Church is the Body of Christ, as mentioned in scripture, ask yourself this... WHAT WOULD JESUS DO??? I think that although you will not like the answer, you will know what it is.

Because the bible isn't mentioning it and Jesus and the bible writers no more, we can be certain that masturbation is no sin. Christians are allowed to masturbate, Christians should masturbate and Christians should encourage all the others, Christians or non- Christians, to masturbate because of all the positive effects and benefits of masturbation activity on body and mind. On the other way it is hard to convinced Christians when they were learned in childhood that masturbation is bad and a sin and ejaculation is nasty. This must be stopped for to avoid psychological conflicts in child's mind. But this is the work to do, we must go ahead and the earlier parents and teachers are explaining to children that they have not to be ashamed when masturbating, that it's natural to masturbate, that masturbation isn't prohibited and they should not be afraid of it because they shall never be punished when masturbating or staining their wears or fabric when ejaculating, the faster the myth of sin from masturbation will disappear from our mentality, social behaviour and Christian doctrine. I am a Christian who is regularly masturbating several times a week and who doesn't feel any guilt. I wish the same freedom for all others, boys, girls, adults, males and females. We all can belief that God will never punish us because of our masturbation practices.
