(1) Criminal - There are those that argue prostitution is a criminal behavior that has been outlawed in most jurisdictions and should be a universally illegal practice. The positive side to this argument is the possible decrease in sexually transmitted diseases, less illegitimate children, and less marital problems among married men and women. The negatives can be the employment factor -- that prostitutes may be forced to more serious and injurious behaviors in order to make money if prostitution were laws were strictly enforced. Some argue that at least prostitutes are "working" and not stealing.
(2) Legal but Evil - The second group may state that under the law prostitution should be a legal practice but should be shunned by society as unethical and immoral behavior. The positive side to this argument may be that some prostitutes can be reformed in a spiritual sense, particularly those working to support a drug addiction. The negative side to this approach is the difficulty of the outreach needed to convince prostitutes that there is a better way of life.
(3) Necessary - The positive side to this argument is that there are purportedly less "date-rape" style crimes committed where prostitution is legal. This plays on the notion that men "need" a sexual outlet and they are going to get it one way or another so why not let it be peaceful and profitable? There is also the reality that a woman may need to be a prostitute when there is no other source of income in order to survive and support hungry children, etc. The downside to this view is it legitimizes prostitution as a solution to social problems. Why apply for welfare and make $200 a month when you can be a prostitute and make much more than that in a week? This would most likely cause a sharp increase in the amount of prostitutes, again calling into question the increase in transmission of STDs.

Prostitution can be evil or wonderful, depending on how it is handled. Some of my best sexual experiences have been with prostitutes. I agree with brewjam and I also think being it has been with us sense the begining of man kind that no one will ever get rid of it. I also think being it is going to be with us it should be legalized and that the local government should control it by making the women get regular check-ups to cut down on STDs and that the tricks should be required to use condoms to protect the women.
